Description
Presented by: Catriona Steele, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, S-LP(C), Reg. CASLPO, F-ESSD, ASHA Honors
AUDIENCE: Undergraduate, graduate students, Clinical Fellows, experienced clinicians, clinicians who would like to transition from school-based SLP to medical-based SLP.
In this webinar, Professor Steele will discuss current evidence regarding variability in swallowing. The discussion will focus on how knowledge about variations across bolus consistencies, bolus volumes and task repetitions can be used to inform the design of swallowing assessment protocols. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how and when information can be generalized from one task to others, and where limitations regarding generalization should be recognized.
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the extent to which penetration and aspiration vary within a patient across repetitions of thin liquid swallows.
- Summarize what is known about the probability of penetration and aspiration across different bolus consistencies.
- Describe the extent to which residue varies within a patient across different consistencies and bolus volumes.
- Identify assessment tasks that are ideal for challenging swallowing safety and efficiency.
