Description of Webinar

This session with describe the swallowing challenges that exist for individuals with laryngectomy (IWL) via a thorough review of the literature on this topic, spanning 30 years. In addition, clinical case examples will be used, and the behavioral and surgical interventions that were applied to address dysphagia will be discussed. Participants will come away from this session with an understanding of the importance of screening and evaluation of IWL for swallowing deficits and the critical nature of monitoring long term with clinical and instrumental measures. Participants will also understand the team approach to laryngectomy dysphagia management and the interplay between the surgeon and the SLP.

Learning objective

  1. Participants will describe several common causes of dysphagia in IWL.
  2. Participants will understand the evaluation process for IWL, both clinical and instrumental techniques.
  3. Participants will understand the interventions that exist for addressing dysphagia in this population, as well as the limitations that remain.

Presenter Bio:

Laurie Wennerholm is a medical speech language pathologist with a focus on dysphagia and HN cancer care, practicing for 26 years and teaching at the graduate level for 24 years. She is a board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders, a certified lymphedema therapist and works as a Clinical Specialist at NYU Langone Health/Perlmutter Cancer Center. She is a sought-after speaker in HNC SLP management. In addition, she is a peer reviewer for several academic journals. She is nearing completion of a PhD program where she is conducting research studies that aim to create an optimal SLP framework of care for persons with laryngectomy. Special interests include improving care for HNC patients to maximize function and quality of life and training students on evidence-based practices.
