A Tale of Two Swallows: A Case-Based Comparison of Dysphagia Evaluation and Management
Contemporary management of patients with swallowing dysfunction is becoming increasingly complex. As evidenced-based practice continues to evolve, dysphagia practitioners must integrate disease-related variables, therapeutic options, and medical ethics into their decision-making process. As our knowledge base of complex medical conditions has increased exponentially, so has the necessity to extract and apply disease-specific factors to tailor individualized care. The purpose of this course is to demonstrate how dysphagia management does not lend itself to a ‘one-size fits all’ approach. Through this course, specific patient cases will be examined to foster critical thinking in the selection of diagnostic and intervention options.
Objectives:
1) Attendees will describe factors that contribute to aspiration pneumonia development.
2) Attendees will identify ethical factors when recommending nil per os and diet modifications.
3) Attendees will discuss principles of quality of life in dysphagia management.

Biography of Presenter
Dr. Lisa Evangelista is the Director of Speech Pathology at the UC Davis Medical Center, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She is a board-certified specialist in swallowing and swallowing disorders and serves on the Board of Directors for the American Board of Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders and the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association’s Issues in Head and Neck Cancer Topic Committee. Her clinical and research interests include management of swallowing dysfunction following surgical intervention and radiation therapy for head and neck cancers. Dr. Evangelista has lectured internationally and authored peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on dysphagia in head and neck cancers.
