Description: The speakers will cover the opportunities that digital health brings to our patients, as well as to the advancement of our field. The speakers will provide a live demonstration of Mobili-T, a system that uses sEMG biofeedback during swallowing exercise, and share their story from clinical problem solving and ideating to a commercial solution.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1) Understand what digital health is and how it can be used to assist with the assessment and treatment of dysphagia as well as advancing our field
2) Feel comfortable with sEMG biofeedback signal and the evidence behind this technology
3) Understand the Mobili-T system and how it could be used in the clinic with inpatients and outpatients.
PRESENTER(S):
Dr. Jana Rieger is a global leader in functional outcomes assessment related to head and neck disorders. Over her 20-year career in this field, Jana has held roles as a professor, clinician, researcher, and now, entrepreneur. After having built a strong foundation of clinically-based research in the area of head and neck dysfunction with over 80 publications, Dr Rieger spun out a company from the University of Alberta to take an innovation developed in her lab, the Mobili-T, into commercialization. In that entrepreneurial journey, Jana has led a team of over 20 scientists, engineers, clinicians, and industrial designers in all aspects of the Mobili-T’s creation. With her leadership, the True Angle team graduated from the Creative Destruction Laboratory in 2019 – one of the most highly-regarded business accelerators in Canada, and from the MATTER Health Accelerator in Chicago in 2020. In addition to being CEO of True Angle, Dr. Rieger is also a Professor in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta, and the Director of Research at the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine.
Gabi is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Communication Sciences and Disorders Department at the University of Alberta and CPO for True Angle. She is also an Affiliate of the Institute for Reconstructive Sciences in Medicine (iRSM). Gabi started off as a clinician at iRSM, where she amassed over a decade of experience assessing and treating swallowing difficulties in patients with head and neck cancer. Gabi then went on to obtain her PhD, where her research directly influenced the design and development of a mobile system for swallowing exercise called Mobili-T (now a product of True Angle). Gabi’s research with the company brought her the 2020 Michael Donovan NFOSD Innovation Award at the Dysphagia Research Society conference and the 2020 ACSLPA Honour of the College award.
