Description
Velopharygeal dysfunction (VPD) is traditionally discussed in pediatrics, but many adults also deal with this condition. Head and neck cancer survivors, stroke patients and other populations can develop velopharyngeal dysfunction in addition to other swallowing impairments. Diagnostic skills and knowledge of treatment is important for providers treating swallowing issues.
Learning Objectives
1) Identify the adult populations most associated with velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD).
2) Describe the diagnostic procedures and clinical considerations used to identify VPD.
3) Identify current treatment approaches and management strategies for VPD.

Description
Preparing graduate students for the complexities of medical speech-language pathology requires more than traditional coursework; it demands opportunities to practice clinical decision-making in realistic, low-stakes environments. This webinar explores how simulation-based training, including standardized patient methodologies and AI-powered tools, can bridge the gap between academic preparation and clinical readiness. Participants will examine the evidence supporting simulation in health professions education, explore practical frameworks for designing and implementing simulation experiences in medical SLP programs, and consider how these approaches build confidence and competence before students encounter real patients. Case examples from an active graduate SLP program will illustrate both the possibilities and the practical realities of getting a simulation program off the ground. Whether you are a clinical educator looking to strengthen your curriculum or a clinician curious about innovative training approaches, this session offers actionable strategies and a roadmap for bringing simulation into medical SLP education.
