Presented by: Bri Miluk, PhD, CCC-SLP, CLC
Audience: This is an advanced level course for experienced clinicians, clinicians who would like to transition from school-based SLP to medical-based SLP, clinicians experienced with pediatric feeding and swallowing disorders.
Description: This advanced-level webinar provides a comprehensive, evidence-informed exploration of pediatric pharyngeal dysphagia management beyond foundational strategies. Participants will examine key differences between pediatric and adult dysphagia to support developmentally appropriate clinical decision-making. The course critically reviews current research, and its limitations, on pharyngeal dysphagia interventions, such as thickened liquids, including indications, risks, and approaches to systematic weaning, alongside emerging and controversial interventions such as neuromuscular electrical stimulation and modified free water protocols. Additional focus is placed on sensory-based bolus modifications and flow rate manipulation to optimize swallow safety and efficiency. Emphasis is placed on integrating evidence with clinical expertise and family-centered care in complex pediatric cases.
Learning Objectives:
1) Analyze the physiological and developmental differences between pediatric and adult pharyngeal dysphagia to inform individualized treatment planning.
2) Evaluate the evidence base, limitations, and clinical indications for pediatric dysphagia interventions.
3) Apply clinical reasoning, informed content, and shared decision making to determine the safe and efficacious implementation of strategies.
