Updated ACR-SPR Practice Parameters for the Modified Barium Swallow Study

$0.00

The modified barium swallow study (MBSS) is a videofluoroscopic imaging study used to evaluate oral and pharyngeal swallowing function and airway protection. The American College of Radiology (ACR) creates and periodically updates Practice Parameters and Technical Standards for various radiologic procedures, including the MBSS. This webinar will summarize the updated ACR-SPR Practice Parameter for the Performance of the Modified Barium Swallow Study by three experts in the fields of speech-language pathology, adult radiology, and pediatric radiology.

Description

Presented by: Bonnie Martin Harris, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S; Jessica Zarzour, MD; Jeanne Hill, MD

AUDIENCE: Undergraduate, graduate students, Clinical Fellows, experienced clinicians, clinicians who would like to transition from school-based SLP to medical-based SLP.

Webinar Description

The modified barium swallow study (MBSS) is a videofluoroscopic imaging study used to evaluate oral and pharyngeal swallowing function and airway protection. The exam is typically performed by a radiologist together with a speech-language pathologist (SLP). The American College of Radiology (ACR) creates and periodically updates Practice Parameters and Technical Standards for various radiologic procedures, including the MBSS. The goal of these Practice Parameters is to “promote the safe and effective use of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology by describing specific training, skills, and techniques,” and to “narrow the variability among radiology practices and provide guidance to achieve quality in radiology.” In 2023, the ACR partnered with the Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) to update the MBSS Practice Parameter. This webinar will summarize the updated ACR-SPR Practice Parameter for the Performance of the Modified Barium Swallow Study by three experts in the fields of speech-language pathology, adult radiology, and pediatric radiology.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:
1) Understand the background and purpose of the ACR-SPR Practice Parameters.
2) Summarize the primary talking points from the ACR-SPR Practice Parameters for use in clinical education, practice, and advocacy for the MBSS across the life span.
3) Detail the clinical benefit of standardized, validated protocols and commercially available barium sulfate products to reduce variability of the MBSS exam.
4) Describe the technical and patient considerations associated with the MBSS.
5) Demonstrate opportunities for improved communication between radiologists and speech-language pathologists.

This webinar is approximately 60 minutes in length. This is a recording of a live webinar.

This webinar is FREE thanks to an unrestricted educational grant from Bracco Diagnostics.

This webinar is offered for Professional Development Hours (PDHs), previously Certification Maintenance Hours (CMHs). For more info: https://www.asha.org/certification/factdef/.

Certificate of completion available upon request once completed.
