Flashback: Summer 2011. On the last day of my medical internship, my supervisor wished me all the luck and said, “For your CFY (Clinical Fellowship Year), I have a feeling you would really thrive in an LTACH setting.” I had never heard the term ‘LTACH’ before. Instead of probing further into what she meant, in all my excitement of having officially finished grad school, I hopped along my happy way home. Little did I know, this would soon become a turning point in my professional life.
3 months down the line, with a Masters degree in Speech Language Pathology proudly tucked under my belt, I was still looking for a CFY position in a hospital setting. I had not yet settled for any other offers that had come my way. It was then that I noticed a posting for a full time SLP required in an LTACH in Dallas, Texas. I read the words out loud. L-T-A-C? Sounded familiar. Long Term Acute Care Hospital! That’s what that meant. It was what my supervisor had suggested on the last day of my clinical placement… Thinking about working in an LTACH? Want to know if it is the right setting for you?
